Tabletop Game Design Tip #1
The mind needs some blank space. Things need to be aired out for the mind to appreciate them, digest them, and understand them. A little iconography is great. A lot is difficult to remember and is therefore confusing, even with big icon legends. Continue reading →

Toonaria: The Apocalypse Pit
Sometimes only family members and close friends came out to watch, and those who were drawn in by the shocking, violent action. When the floating island chain continued to sink, the details of the curse were remembered and people came out in droves to watch, despite the safety concerns of flying shrapnel, cave-ins, and other side effects of colossal, megaton creatures going to battle. Toonaria: The Dark Over
Apparently all communications networks died simultaneously. What technology wasn’t destroyed, malfunctioned, be it radio, missile silo, or two-slice toaster. Certain technologies were morphed into odd, arcane caricatures of their former designs. Many inanimate objects gained a semblance of life and crawled from the rubble. Screams and then profound silence followed, heralding a season of impenetrable darkness called the Dark Over. Continue reading →

Toonaria: Creating a Universe Part 5
The thing is (and don’t hate me for saying it) . . . innovation is overrated. It really is. Don’t get me wrong—I’m all for it, but it has advantages and disadvantages. And of course we don’t need another generic fantasy or science fiction universe (or copycat universe, for that matter.) That leaves us with one of my earliest goals for both Toonaria and the Cosmoverse, both of which I have been exploring through games, stories and art for well over thirty years: Create something familiar, but not too familiar, something obscure, but not too obscure. Toonaria: Creating a Universe Part 3
Toonaria came together on its own, showing me it was needed, because I couldn’t stop drawing and writing about it! And it filled a different niche, one that inspired laughter, hope and courage, touching on different and sometimes important concepts in ways I could never address in my more serious Cosmoverse. Toonaria: Creating a Universe Part 1
I wanted caches of exotic technology that few could understand, but anyone could accidentally activate, causing all manner of chaos and interesting stories, so I created the ancient Architects. These god-like AI have their own agendas and travel the universes leaving behind machines and objects of power for reasons of their own. They aren’t doing it randomly –these aren’t merely plot devices–they have a reason for every object they’ve placed, but the mysteries behind them are not usually obvious. Continue reading →

The Road Ahead. Why all the fuss?
Life’s a roller coaster, so don’t expect things to always go your way. The one thing that never changes is that things are going to change. In a rough spot? Chances are that will change. In a valley? Keep going, there’s a mountaintop ahead! Keep a positive attitude, but be realistic, too. Continue reading →

Toonaria Campaign Setting
After looking at the samples I gave you over the past two weeks, while they were fun ones, I noticed that saying I barely scratched the surface of what sort of adventures you could have in the Toonaria Campaign Setting … Continue reading →

Adventures in Toonaria Part 5
Never had the puff floated so high. It won’t be long now and I’ll be back home, the cloudling thought. It was much work to float so high at his age, being more dense than the oldlings, but he was determined to visit his uncle, for he heard rumors about a tainted ship heading for that region with a crew of Dark Ones, and feared for his family. Adventures in Toonaria Part 2
Adventures in Toonaria the Blended-Genre Campaign Setting, by design, vary wildly depending on where you are in the universe. So what. That’s the case to some degree, on any given world in any universe. True, but we’re talking about Toonaria, … Continue reading →
