Tabletop Game Design Tip #1
The mind needs some blank space. Things need to be aired out for the mind to appreciate them, digest them, and understand them. A little iconography is great. A lot is difficult to remember and is therefore confusing, even with big icon legends. Continue reading →

Custom Dice, Art and Fiction Kickstarter
I’m doing the Kickstarter because a little over 40 years ago when I was just a young teenager, I started dreaming up 2 universes, and I’ve been writing stories and designing both rpgs and board games set in those universes ever since. Continue reading →

It’s not always as glamorous as it seems
I’m behind in celebrating our 40th Anniversary of our 2 universes: The Cosmoverse for much of our fiction, and Toonaria, for most of our games and some fiction, so we’re running a Kickstarter soon! We’ll be sharing RPG dice, art and fiction. Continue reading →

Toonaria: The Dark Over
Apparently all communications networks died simultaneously. What technology wasn’t destroyed, malfunctioned, be it radio, missile silo, or two-slice toaster. Certain technologies were morphed into odd, arcane caricatures of their former designs. Many inanimate objects gained a semblance of life and crawled from the rubble. Screams and then profound silence followed, heralding a season of impenetrable darkness called the Dark Over. Continue reading →

Toonaria Creature Spotlight: Snugglebunnies!
Toonaria is the sort of place like in the old Andy Griffith show where most everyone gets along and are friendly, but misunderstandings and questionable outside influences inevitably stir up trouble. Just as The Wizard of Oz had their sweet munchkins and Glinda the Good Witch, there was also the Wicked Witch of the West and her flying monkeys. Snugglebunnies, like much of Toonaria, harken back to a more innocent time, but make no mistake, there’s plenty of conflict and even thought-provoking, meaningful things going on—just not always. 🙂 Continue reading →

Toonaria: Creating a Universe Part 5
The thing is (and don’t hate me for saying it) . . . innovation is overrated. It really is. Don’t get me wrong—I’m all for it, but it has advantages and disadvantages. And of course we don’t need another generic fantasy or science fiction universe (or copycat universe, for that matter.) That leaves us with one of my earliest goals for both Toonaria and the Cosmoverse, both of which I have been exploring through games, stories and art for well over thirty years: Create something familiar, but not too familiar, something obscure, but not too obscure. Continue reading →

Toonaria: Creating a Universe Part 2
Shapers with advanced training can crack into their spell templates and swap out key components to improve spell efficiency and expand their spells’ options. It isn’t uncommon to see a mage rush over after an illegal street duel and attempt to hack into a fallen mage’s template in hopes of salvaging something. Continue reading →

Mysteries of Toonaria: Part 4
Over the eons, several significant individuals (and even a few gods) have stumbled upon one clone gate or another, and perhaps thinking the gates mere mundane, or even teleportation or dimensional gates, passed through to explore the other side. None are ever prepared for what they find there. Continue reading →

Mysteries of Toonaria: Part 2
“How is this even possible?” He shuddered when he thought back over the past forty-eight hours. “The GodStorm . . . it did this to me,” he whispered, as if to speak of it louder might summon the magical anomaly. He recalled the stories he’d been told in his youth of Deamond, Ariam, Lorel, Vomix and other gods who were swept up in the storm, lost forever, their spirits becoming one with the storm. He shuddered again. Continue reading →
